A gall is a deformity in a plant that’s caused by another organism—which could be a fungus or a bacterium or a mite, but many of the most conspicuous ones are insect-caused. There are wasps and flies [including midges] and aphids . To identify galls, probably the best references are Plant Galls and Gall-Makers by E.P. Felt (Hafner Press) and The Plant-Feeding Gall Midges of North America by R.J. Gagne (Cornell Universtiy Press).
